Tutoring

Private Tutoring

I primarily work with middle and high school students on reading comprehension, critical reading, essays and thesis statements, vocab, verbal sections on standardized tests, and general language arts homework support. I love helping to organize binders, as well as talk about poetry, young adult novels, and feminism.

I’m not currently taking new private clients, but if that changes, I will post here.

My History and Training

I cut my tutoring teeth working for several years at North Seattle Community College’s writing center, the Loft, one of the strongest community college writing centers in the Northwest. While there, I was certified at the “master” tutor level by the College Reading and Learning Association and was the lead tutor for the Loft’s online tutoring program. I worked with students of many different ages, cultures, and backgrounds, and made each session successful by keeping the tone light and the content engaging.

Since 2005, I have been an active volunteer at 826 Seattle, a writing and tutoring center for youths ages 6-18. I tutor there on a regular basis and teach workshops on subjects like writing argumentative essays about why Pluto is a planet (or why it isn’t), tackling a basic five-paragraph essay, writing personal statements, and creating the perfect menu for visiting alien dignitaries. (826 Seattle is also home to the Greenwood Space Travel Supply Company).
